Uniaxial strain tuning

for APRPES, STM, EELS

Applying uniaxial strain is a convenient way to tune the electronic properties of a crystal. Exotic new electronic transitions can be observed through the application of controlled strain. For the first time this can be combined with valuable UHV techniques, such as ARPES, EELS and STM.

Fits standard Systems

Omicron/SPECS/Fermi and others

A vacuum transfer system puts servere constraints on the size of devices and makes adding electrical connections difficult. The MC051 is supremely convenient as it conforms to most standard vacuum systems and does not require electrical feedthroughs; the differential screw can be adjusted using the wobblestick adaptor provided.

Force Feedback

Mechanical force indicator

Although the MC051 has no electrical connections, it can still provide some approximate force feedback. The needle indicator pictured below will translate +/- 1.5 mm in response to applied force on the sample. By using digital image correlation or simple pixel counting, it is possible to determine the applied force on the sample from the the displacement of the indicator observed.

Improved Reliability

At cryogenic & high temperature

Several improvements have been made over previous products. A phosphor-bronze thimble (a differential screw with an external and internal thread) has been introduced to reduce the chance of the sliding surfaces seizing, without introducing differential thermal effects. Higher temperatures are now possible as epoxy connections have been entirely replaced with brazed joins and micro-welds.
